The 44th Gloucester (STRS) Explorer Scout Unit is a unique organisation which is an integral and vital part of Sir Thomas Rich’s School. One of the first Venture Scout Units in the District of Gloucester, when it evolved naturally in the late sixties from the school's own Senior Scout Troop, the 44th was again one of the first in the District to make the transition to Explorer Scout Unit, following the Scout Movement's Millennium Review and restructuring. Thus the 44th has a proud and unique tradition within local Scouting.

In the 44th we aim to develop a sense of responsibility and caring, leadership and involvement, adventure and belonging. The unit belongs to the members and is run by the members, who through a wide range of activities seek to better themselves by their best personal efforts and in the process develop lasting and rewarding friendships.
