The 44th Gloucester (STRS) Explorer Scout Unit is a unique organisation which is an integral and vital part of Sir Thomas Rich's School. We offer a uniquely exciting and rewarding perspective of Scouting!
Some people are put off Explorer Scouts by preconceived ideas as to what it's all about - some of you may have experienced Scouting elsewhere and left because you didn't like it. Since the Millennium Review and New Programme Implementation in Scouting, Explorer Units are no longer tied to Group Scout Units with their structure of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, etc. They can operate independently within the District and therefore concentrate on offering their very own focus of specialist activities and training.
In the 44th we aim to develop a sense of responsibility and caring, leadership and involvement, adventure and belonging. The unit belongs to the members and is run by the members, who through a wide range of activities seek to better themselves by their best personal efforts and in the process develop lasting and rewarding friendships.
We are always ready to welcome prospective members - to help you take the first step here are a few frequently asked questions......
What exactly do the Explorer Scouts do?
The unit tackles all sorts of activities which over recent years have included climbing, abseiling, caving, mountain biking, orienteering, hill walking, night hikes, conservation, community service, survival training and wilderness experiences, raft racing, ice skating, 10 pin bowling, swimming, football, fitness training and more besides! We always encourage members to suggest activities that they wish to try - you never know how good you might be!!!
What about badges, awards and things?
The unit is not just an "adventure club". We adhere strongly to the fundamental principle of Scouting and the ethos of the school that the greatest rewards come from serving your friends and community. Through our varied programme of events and activities we follow the Scout Award Training Schemes and we encourage everyone to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as an integral part of these.
Yes there are badges .......
What is the uniform like?
We are an activity based unit and wear clothing suitable to the activities we do. We wear our Unit sweatshirt - with the School crest and Scout fellowship badge - and our Unit neck scarf. For really formal occasions then the necessary Scout uniform is required.
How much does it cost to join?
Present annual subscription is £40. This covers Scout Association membership and insurance.
When does it all happen?
We normally meet on Friday evenings at school between 7pm and 9:30pm. There are several weekend activities per term as well. We have our own HQ - a converted Marley garage at the back of the Bowls green - cosy, with pool table and darts for quieter social events!
Do I get a say in what the unit does?
Everyone has a say in what goes on. The Unit is run by a small number of senior members who along with the unit leaders form the executive committee. Together they plan a programme based on activities and events that the members have requested or shown an interest in.
What about expeditions?
There is generally a major expedition during the Summer vacation. Shorter trips take place in half term breaks or Easter holidays. Destinations have recently included Scotland, Eire, Dartmoor, North Wales, Norway, Orkney, South Devon & Portland.
Is living a long way from the school a disadvantage?
This obviously causes some problems with evening meetings but a number of members are in this position and still manage to attend most activities. Informal unit activity also takes place during the school day.
What is the key to the unit's success?
The commitment and friendship of the membership. The spirit of working together for everyone's benefit and enjoyment. The joint endeavour of meeting a challenge and successfully overcoming it.
What things are the unit doing at the moment?
Already planned for this term are an Activities Camping weekend with other Scouts from the county, Five Valleys walk, Dragon Boat Racing, Survival Skills and hopefully a First Aid course - check out the Activities Web Page!
What do I do next?
Speak to some of the existing members; come along to some of the meetings; get involved!!! If you then think Explorer Scouting with the 44th is definitely for you, you will be asked to have an informal chat with some of the executive before being formally admitted to the unit.
