Swedish Paddles, Stalking Red Deer & Bagging Monroes

The unit has been busy across all fronts this year.  A major focus was fund-raising for Paddle 81 in which initially some of the senior members were to take part.  As it turned out, they didn't, which was just as well given the way things panned out in Sweden and the age group and expertise of the canoeists taking part.  The VSL, Phil Brown & Row Lloyd however did more than their 'bit' in supporting the venture - much more can be read about their (mis)adventures elsewhere.

We said 'Farewell' to our AVSL Bill Spear as he moved across town to our arch-rival establishment to be their new Head of Geography.  His presence on many a summer expedition has proven equally valuable and entertaining.  Who can ever forget his 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' on 'Island Venture' in 1976?

Although away for the first 2 weeks of the summer holidays with Paddle 81, the VSL still managed to take a party north to the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides.  The weather was immaculate, which made for some fantastic trekking and mountaineering.  Camping on the southern shores of Loch na Keal will always remain etched in the memories of those who were there.

Paddle 81 - The gripping tale of the highs & lows of this major kayak expedition over the seas, lakes & waterways of Scandinavia.
