Cycle Tour & The Healy Pass

"Two Boys In Tandem"
or
"Blazing Saddles Up The Healy Pass!"

Riding a tandem is not as easy as it first looks! To be honest, I'm surprised we got out of Castletown but after several dangerous and wobbling laps of the harbour carpark we did.

Blazing ahead of the rest of the pack we soon had a clear lead, which we kept for the entire journey, with hard uphill slogs and crazy downhill rides. Safety being the main priority we didn't almost fall under several cars. But soon the fun was over as we reached the Healy Pass; by this point it had become obvious the rear saddle was no more than a piece of thin moulded plastic which meant that pain was experienced in places we didn't even realise we had!

After much tireless effort, straining and sweating limbs and much steam escaping through the lace holes of our boots, we crawled onto the top of the Pass and were rewarded with stunning views back and forward, and the discovery of an overpriced tourist shop and ice cream vendor.

With a brief pause to wait for the minibus and a hot drink, we set off down the other side of the hill. Weeeeee! To say safely was a lie - seeing that we covered the six kilometres to the bottom in less than 10 minutes, overtaking one car, a herd of cows and narrowly missing a Landrover on one of the many hairpin bends!
