We are in the process of developing a link with Parvatiben Muljibhai Madhvani Girls' School in Jinja, Uganda. This is a girls' school with 500 pupils aged 13 - 18 and 48 staff. The girls study Ugandan 'O' and 'A' Levels.
The Headmistress Petronella Lujwala is optimistic that they "will benefit a lot from this link by sharing knowledge, resources and experience."
This looks to be an exciting prospect with opportunities to enhance teaching and learning across many subject disciplines, from Art and Music to English, Economics and History. Exchanges of teachers and pupils could result.
Mr Seales and Mr Crewe visited the school for 9 days in April 2003 to explore possibilities for developing the link.
PMM Headmistress Petronella Lujwala and Ben Ligwale (Head of IT & Physics) made a return visit to STRS in July 2003 to establish the link of friendship and cooperation between the 2 schools.

Jinja is a large town on the northern shore of Lake Victoria (on the south-eastern border of Uganda), 60 km north-east of Kampala, where the waters of the White Nile begin. It is most well known for two things, Owen Falls Dam, a hydro-electric dam which powers much of the south and class 5 white water rafting. Jinja is also one of the spots on which Mahatma Gandhi chose to have his ashes scattered.
The following photos are of the local area. The front of the school, the Owen Falls Dam, rafting on the White Nile at Jinja and a local village school.
At the time of our visit (April 2003) £1 was worth 3,000 Ugandan shillings. A local boda boda ride (bicycle taxi) cost about 10p and a Nile Special beer (brewed in Jinja) cost 50p.
