At STRS we currently have a coaching staff which provides a wealth of experience and expertise

Mr I J Gallagher
I have had the pleasure of being involved in rugby since the age of 11 as either player, coach, administrator, selector, teacher and, not least, spectator.
As a player I had several enjoyable seasons with Cinderford RFC and Gordon League RFC until forced to retire at the tender age of 28 with a non-rugby injury. Since then I have coached at a senior level with Gordon League RFC and Old Richians RFC.
At Schools level I have been coach, selector and secretary to the District and County U16s and have helped with selection at County U18 level. Alongside all of this I have been able to oversee the development of many youngsters through the rugby at school and have taught all age groups from Year 7 up to 1st XV, enjoying the many challenges and successes along the way.
My philosophy at all levels has been to develop players in all positions to meet the physical and confrontational demands of the game and to develop alongside and around this the skill level necessary to challenge the opposition in all areas of the field.
This is all within a framework of rugby being the winner. Therefore sportsmanship and respect to all is seen as very important and all players are expected to play within the spirit of the game. Rugby is also seen as very much one part of the education programme and is an opportunity for those at the bottom level as well as for those who want to reach the top of the sport.
Coaching Level III
Mr R Sims
Position: Coach (formerly lock)
Playing: Longlevens RFC, Gloucester Colts & U21, UWIC RFC
Experience: WRU Qualified
Interests: All rugby related matters hold fascination!
Aims: For me rugby is the ultimate team sport. It can develop teamwork, leadership, responsibility, belonging and camaraderie. Deviance is rare and respect for officials paramount.
Rugby has enabled me to travel the world and make lasting friendships with like-minded people. I have found that the rugby fanatic in Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, the USA, Canada, France and others is much the same as myself.
Above all it is important to enjoy the sport. I try to develop a team ethic where we play to our strengths and for each other. It is obviously often more enjoyable if you are winning! However if all players perform to their potential then the result is secondary.
My overall philosophy is that if school players continue to play rugby at any level when they leave school, then it is a job well done.

U13 Coach ....
Mr M R Swann
2nd XV Coach ....
Mr P J Brown
Having played for the prestigious and successful Rich's 1st XV in the mid-seventies under the captaincy at one point of Chris Carter, I am delighted to be able to renew our partnership at U13 level as CDAC's Assistant Coach and referee for most of their games. Finding new and absorbing ways of getting the junior forwards to drill for an open and fast game based on quick rucking and recycling is always a challenge, for which I'm grateful of the ideas of my more illustrious and experienced colleagues!
My greatest buzz comes from seeing the oft-compromised and make-shift "B" team sides play with so much heart and courage, that deficiencies in technique and skill pass unnoticed in the tide of passion, pride and team spirit they engender. Such youthful enthusiasm for this wonderful team game is a superb foil for today's professionalism.
