The Spring Term culminated in a flurry of zany activities, crazy stunts and impromptu as well as organised musical and acting extravaganzas as the whole school flung itself with gusto into a frantic drive to raise funds for our sister school in Uganda, the PMM School for Girls in Jinja. Our fund raising efforts went a long way to provide the estimated £4000+ needed to support the education of 20 girls for another year as well as cover the costs of a two-way staff exchange visit during the summer term.
Some of the sponsored events included Callum Bird of 10B dying his hair a different colour for each day of the week (toned down on Wednesday when the official school photograph was taken!); Kingston Myles (our very own recently elected member of the UK Youth Parliament) keeping silent for a whole day; Battle of The Bands; Staff Rappers (that's Rappers not Wrappers!); Penalty Shoot-Out; Pennies along the Nile; No Homework Day; Skateboarding Exhibition; Will Middleton's Sponsored Swim; Cake Sales; and many, many more!
On two nights during Founder's Week the Senior Drama department took to the stage with the musical Nightshriek. For just over two months, the cast of over 30 students had worked extremely hard to put together this complicated show, which is a rock musical version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
The musical acts as a rock/gothic vehicle for the story of betrayal, murder, the paranormal, villains and heroes. Scott Yearsley starred as the troubled Macbeth, with Theresa Turner as the dark, manipulative character of Lady Macbeth. Joining them in other leading roles were Joe Patel, as the valiant Macduff and Nafisa Sayani as Lady Macduff, Macduff’s loyal wife. They were supported by a strong cast of witches, soldiers and a chorus of attendants and messengers. All acted, sang and danced superbly and provided excellent entertainment to over 160 people across the two nights. Many other students and staff supported the production in terms of stage crew, lighting and sound, set design and costumes, but Mr Crumblehulme and Mrs Briscoe were most grateful to Jon Roskilly, who, by himself, directed an incredibly talented rock band with a complicated score, bringing them to a polished and professional unit in just only three weeks! Hopefully, a DVD release of the show will be available after Easter for anyone who missed the performances, or wants to relive them over and over! Profits made will be donated to charities, including PMM School in Uganda. Thanks again to all concerned for making this production a success.
This promising young band of talented players, ably coached by our new member of Games Staff Mr Rhys Williams, concluded an impressive season of rugby, claiming some major scalps in the process. Their only two defeats were in the Daily Mail competitions, where they went out in Round 2 of the Cup to arch rivals St Peters High School and in Round 5 of the Vase to a strong Royal Latin School.
Once again the school's Explorer Scout Unit staged a very successful disco for year 7 & 8 pupils at Rich's and Denmark Road High School for Girls. Raising funds chiefly for The Cobalt Appeal Fund, the unit was able to donate £200 to this worthy local charity. With the excellent Phil Jay's Sound Survey Roadshow hitting the groove and laying down some pulsing and gyrating beats, everyone had a super-cool evening.
The 44th Explorer Scout Unit wishes to thank the school for the ongoing gratis use of the school hall and facilities on such occasions, which enables them to make bigger donations to worthy causes than would otherwise be the case if the school levied its usual charges for letting the hall. They are also grateful to Mrs Poole, Mrs MacDonald, Mrs Young and Mrs Kellaway for their help with ticket promotions.
Gloucestershire Constituency Elections for the UK Youth Parliament take place this week. Across the county's three constituencies (Gloucester & Forest of Dean, Cheltenham & Tewkesbury, Cotswold & Stroud) there are a total of 25 candidates standing in this year's election.
Sir Thomas Rich's School has three candidates standing this year: David Anderton, Kingston Myles & Jonathon Springer.

The Election Results will be announced between 6.30 & 8.30pm on Wednesday 1st February at the Council Chambers, Shire Hall in Gloucester.
Congratulations to Kingston Myles who was returned as MYP for Gloucester & The Forest of Dean.
During 2005 our students have enjoyed one of the most extensive programmes of overseas visits of possibly any school in the UK. As well as the regular exchange visits to France and Germany, there have also been work experience placements organised for our A Level students in both countries. Trips to Spain, China, Bulgaria, Taiwan, Eire enhanced the global citizenship elements of our school curriculum. The work with our partner school in Uganda developed further with staff exchange visits.
In 2006 we look forward to expanding our links with Italian and Bulgarian schools as part of our Comenius Project involvement. And plans are now being made for our rugby and netball players to tour Australia in July 2007.
Our international links have already started with a visit by ten German students from Aachen who completed their work experience at various placements in Gloucestershire while staying with their exchange partner families during the first week of term. Our students return to Aachen for a similar work experience exchange at the end of term in March. Click on the Aachen crest for reports and photos.
