STRS in the News - Summer Term 2007

Fond Farewells to Two Special Members of Staff

 Friday 20th July

We say “Good-bye” to two much-valued members of staff at the end of term today.

Mr Brian McBurnie, Deputy Headmaster, retires after some 38 years of service. Brian must be unique in having done his teacher training at Rich’s and then followed on by spending his whole teaching career at the school. This must surely reflect Brian’s devotion to the school and on the school, in that it was able to retain the services of such a devoted and good schoolmaster for such a long time. We wish Brian all the very best for his retirement - although in the long-standing tradition of Rich’s staff retiring from full time teaching, he will still be teaching part-time with us next year!

Mrs Joan Arnold also bows out at the end of term, taking the opportunity of early retirement to pursue her many other interests that have themselves brought great interest and stimulation to her pupils, be it in her main subject of Biology or in the many other curriculum areas in which she has taught. The school will be forever indebted to her for establishing and managing “Food Technology” at Rich’s and many a Rich’s lad first learnt their culinary skills and understanding from JMA! Her role as a Year 7 tutor was invaluable in helping 30 or so boys in each fresh intake settle quickly into the routine and life of the school. We wish Joan rich happiness and experiences!

 U14s & U15s Win City Cups

18th July 2007

Congratulations to Harry Young and his U15 cricket team for securing the City Trophy. This means that in successive seasons, through all playing levels U12 to U15, they have proved best in the city!

With Rich's teams in all four age level finals yet again, only the U14s this year managed joined their elders as winners.

 Annual Sports Evening Washed Out!

6 July 2007

The annual Sports Evening was postponed from its evening slot because of heavy rain, something no-one at the school can ever remember happening before! It was hastily re-organised between the persistant rain fronts for the following day during the morning school period, an unexpected bonus for pupils who were allowed out of lessons to compete and support their teams. Many outstanding performances were witnessed, including six new school records being set.

After all the effort and exertion the final positions were:

PositionHousePoints
1stWestgate289½
2ndSouthgate280½
3rdNorthgate236

Ben Morris of Year 10 was presented with The Walter Rangeley Cup for Best Sprinter for winning both his 100m and 200m races.

Junior Cricket Teams Enjoy Warm Island Sunshine

Monday 21st to Friday 25th May

For the third year running, our Junior cricketers enjoyed a tour to the Channel Island of Jersey.

Teams from U13 & U14 levels both played 3 matches a piece and found the island bathed in warm sunshine for the duration of their week long visit.

 Quiz Night

Friday 27th April

The school's Explorer Scout Unit ran yet another successful and enjoyable Quiz Night in the school Hall. Although numbers were slightly down in comparison to the ever popular November Quiz Night, a taxing time was still had by all, and those who attended throughly enjoyed themselves.

The PMM School in Uganda & Cobalt Appeal Fund were two main beneficiaries from the profits made on the evening.
